Website Polk City Fire Department
The Polk City Fire Department is a combination department staffed by full-time, part-time, and paid-on-call members. Over the past three years, the department has transitioned from part-time staffing to a full-time model. Currently, three full-time Firefighter/Paramedics work 48/96 hour shifts alongside a part-time member. The department is led by a full-time Fire Chief who maintains normal business hours and also responds to calls with the crews.
The City of Polk City is experiencing steady growth of approximately 4% annually, with emergency call volume increasing by 20% in the past two years. The department’s response district covers 70 square miles of northern Polk County, which includes transport times of 20–30 minutes to downtown hospitals.
Polk City is also a recreation destination, attracting over one million visitors each year. The department provides specialized services including water rescue and ice rescue on both Saylorville Lake and Big Creek State Park Lake.
In 2024, the department completed a major station remodel that added a modern kitchen, living quarters, bunk rooms, and a gym to better support its staff. Looking ahead, the department is in the process of upgrading its fleet and equipment. A new ambulance and fire engine are scheduled for delivery in fall 2025, a new rescue boat is planned for FY27, and a ladder truck will be added in FY28.
